Superstar Beyoncé has posted several new photos to celebrate motherhood with textual content referring to Oshun, an African deity of water, love and fertility.
The photos which show Beyoncé having a good time as she prepares to deliver twins, were posted on her website with inspiring text about motherhood and historic figures of feminine energy.
They show the superstar swimming under water, reclining on a bed of roses and sitting naked on a floral throne.
In the text Beyoncé mentions Venus, the Roman goddess of love, Egyptian queen Nefertiti and West African deity Osun, who seemingly inspired some of the images.
In one of the passages, she says:
Mother is a cocoon where
cells spark, limbs form, mother
swells and stretches to protect her
child, mother has one foot in this world
and one foot in the next
mother, black Venus
In one of the photos Beyoncé is standing naked, cradling her belly with one hand and a breast with the other, next to the sculpted head of an Egyptian ruler.
In another photos, she can be seen cradling belly and breast again while wearing a Statue of Liberty-style crown.
On Wednesday Beyoncé and husband Jay Z announced on Instagram that they were expecting twins. They said: “We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.”
Oshun, which inspired one of the images, is a spirit or deity that reflects one of the manifestations of God in the Ifá and Yoruba religions. She is the deity of femininity/feminine sexuality, fertility, dance and fresh water. Her colors are yellow and white. She is the lover/wife/companion of Shango whom she has a deep love for and a strained relationship due to his other wives/lovers.
